Other Information:William died of double pneumonia and cardiac failure, his death was certified by Captain Alex Robertson Forrest Hay - Informant Corporal E.Fort. William's CWGC headstone was erected on the 6th November 1926 with the inscription " Rest in the Lord". His name also appears on the Roll of Honour in the church and on the adjacent war memorial (as William C. Mathews). William was the brother of Alfred John Matthews (also served with the RAMC) and the son of William Charles and Ellen Matthews (nee Talmash) of Highland Cottage, Lock's Road, Sarisbury, Hants.
