John was the son of Samuel and Kate Marsland of 316 Manchester Road, Denton, Lancs. He was called up for service on the 19th February 1917 and was posted to the 28th Manchester Regiment on the 24th. At that time John resided with his parents, he was 18 years and 17 months old and a Hat Stumper by trade. On the 3rd May 1917, John suffered from an attack of Epilepsy and was hospitalised with the 309th (H.C.) Field Ambulance, it was recorded that he had a slight attack whilst in hospital and remained there for 13 days. John suffered another attack on the 28th May, this time he was in hospital for 6 days with the same medical unit. On the 12th December 1917, John transferred to the RAMC and was stationed at 7th Training Battn. RAMC, Blackpool. He remained there until the 18th January 1918, when he was posted to No 8 Coy for duty at a hospital in Newcastle-on-Tyne. However, John suffered another attack on the 20th April 1918, he was admitted to a war hospital in Sheffield and was then discharged permanantley unfit for war service on the 27th May 1918.
