Ernest appears to have had various jobs as on different forms in his service record his occupation is variously stated as watch repairer or mill hand or woollen spinner. He enlisted on 15th January 1916, aged 20 years and 30 days, and was then sent to the army reserve. On 2nd March 1916 he was mobilized and posted to the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI). Whilst with the 1st/5th Battalion of the KOYLI he served two periods in France. On 22nd July 1917 he was admitted to 141st Field Ambulance and it appears a short time later he was classed as no longer fit for war service. On 29th January 1918 he was transferred to 3rd (Res) Battalion KOYLI at Hedon near Hull and on the 14th February on to the 1st Training Battalion of the R.A.M.C. at Blackpool. On 3rd April 1918 he was posted to No 8 Coy, R.A.M.C. for duty at the Hospital in Dewsbury (Heavy Woollen District Auxiliary Military Hospital). On 16th March 1919 he died of influenza at the Military hospital in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Ernest was the son of George Henry Dyson of 46 Upper Road, Batley Carr, Batley.
