Thomas enlisted on 6th December 1915. He was a gardener/labourer by trade. He was put on the army reserve, then on 9th February 1916 was sent home on reserve classed as unfit. On 13th January 1917 he had a further medical examination and was mobilized on 29th January 1917. He was posted to ‘Z’ Coy on 31st January 1917. On 6th April 1917 he was transferred to Dover and on 17th April 1917 to Throwley (Kent). On 8th May 1917 he was transferred back to Dover and had three spells in Castle Mount Hospital, Dover once recovering from influenza in July 1918. On 27th September 1918 he was discharged from the army classed as being no longer physically fit for war service. At the time of discharge his papers state he was in No 11 Coy. Robert was the son of William and Harriet Chipchase of New Row, Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire. (Information researched and kindly provided by Chris Ludlam)
