Walter worked for the Weldon Tramcar Company as a welders/fitters labourer. He enlisted 1st June 1915, aged 19 years and 56 days and joined the 3rd Bn, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) at Hamilton on 2nd June 1915 (Service No. 20931). With the 2nd Bn. Cameronians he served in France between 1st March 1916 to 20th July 1916 and was wounded in action on 17th July 1916 and sent back to the UK suffering from shell shock. After recovering he again served in France between 13th Feb 1917 and 4th March 1917 but was again sent back to the UK this time suffering from varicose veins. On 4th October 1917 he was transferred to 296th Reserve Labour Coy (Service No 451814) at Blairgowrie in Scotland and then to the 8th Training Battalion, RAMC on 15th Dec 1917. In February 1918 when at RAMC Blackpool he was admonished for overstaying his leave. On 2nd April 1918 he was posted to the 1st Northern General Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne and was admitted sick, complaining of pain in his right chest, to the same hospital on 27th April 1918 where he died of bronchial pneumonia.
