William enlisted into the R.A.M.C. T.F. on 21st August 1915. He was 17 years and 8 months old, was a Clerk, working at the Inland Revenue, and was living at 49 Rutland Road, Chesterfield, Derbyshire at the time. He was embodied into the 3rd Northern General Hospital at Sheffield the same day. On 17th June 1917, William embarked at Southampton - then disembarking the next day at Havre, entered the war in France on 18th June 1917. On the 21st he left Havre heading for Rouen and arrived on the 22nd, when he joined Cyclists Base Depot there. He was then posted to serve with the 18th Field Ambulance, in the field.
