George was a crane driver. He enlisted on 16th September 1916 aged 17 years 8 months and was appointed to the 2nd Northern General Hospital, which was based at Beckett’s Park, Headingley, Leeds, however initially he was added to the Army Reserve presumably until he turned 18. He was mobilized on 28th February 1917 and was posted on 13th March 1917 to the 2nd Northern General Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital where he worked on 23rd April 1917 and died seven days later on 30th April 1917. The CWGC record states that he died of meningitis however his Service Record states he died of malignant endocarditis (heart disease). George was the son of Thomas and Emily Ann Clarkson of 41 Woodhouse Cliffe, Hyde Park Leeds. (Information researched and kindly provided by Chris Ludlam).
