Other Information:Alexander was educated at James Gillespie’s School, Edinburgh, and became a Clerk by trade, working with the Caledonian Insurance Company. He joined the R.A.M.C. (T.F.) on 3rd April 1911. He was 26 years and 7 months old, and was living at 122 Gilmore Place, Edinburgh at the time. He gained promotion to Serjeant on 26th June 1914, and was serving with No 2 Scottish General Hospital when war was declared. Alexander was embodied for active service on 5th August 1914, and was sent to serve at the Craigleith Military Hospital. On 13th October 1915 he gained further promotion to acting Staff Serjeant. His service agreement expired but he was re-engaged for another 4 years from 8th January 1916. His service number changed from 1389 to 2173. On 2nd June 1916, he was transferred to serve with the 3/2nd Lowland Field Ambulance. His rank reverted back to Serjeant on the 11th November 1916. On 15th April 1917, he was posted to serve with the Regular R.A.M.C. in Blackpool. He reported for duty at “B” Coy on the 30th April then on 3rd November he transferred to No 7 Coy. On 30th August 1917, Alexander attended the Aural Centre for an ear report. The diagnosis was Otitis Media, which had broken out again after Diphtheria. He died at the Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol from Otitis Media and heart failure. He was the son of William and Elizabeth A L (daughter of John Roberston) Ritchie.
