Pte E E Redfern was a naïve of Leicester. He was the youngest of nine men to answer the call to duty during October 1915 and enlisted into the RAMC at Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham, it was reported that he rendered excellent service in the officers' and medical and surgical wards there. At the time of enlisting, Pte Redhern was serving an apprenticeship with Messrs Enderby and Son, pianoforte dealers. He was also a member of the local Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade, bearing the rank of Lance-Corporal. During the week of 15th April 1916, he underwent a serious operation in Chatham Military Hospital, but appeared to progress well after. [Information and photo: special thanks to John Kitchen]
