Patrick was a civil surgeon in West Africa from 1900-1901. He gained a commission at the rank of Lieutenant on 22nd June 1901, and then served in India from 1902-1907. During this time, on 22nd June 1904, he was promoted to Captain. Patrick went to Ceylon in 1911, he was promoted again to Major on 22nd March 1913, then returned to England in 1914. He was the son of Robert Hyde (Surgeon-Maj, A.M.S.) and Jane Llewlyn Hyde; and the husband of Mary Carson Hyde of 23 St. Mark's Court, Abercorn Place, St. John's Wood, London.
