Thomas enlisted on 14th September 1914. He was 19 years old and a ship steward by trade. On 20th March 1915 he was admitted into Llandrindod Well Military Hospital complaining of 'Shortness of Breath" which prevented him marching. When he was examined they found a mitral systolic murmur. He was discharged from hospital on 23rd April 1915 and then discharged from the army on on 15th July 1915 as 'No longer physically fit for war service. He was the son of Edward Harper and Sarah Jane Bennett.
