Michael received his medical training at the Coombe Hospital, Dublin, qualifying L.R.C.P & L.M. in 1882, and F.R.C.S.I. in 1894. He took up a commission within the Medical Services at the rank of Surgeon Captain on 30th January 1886, then from 1890 to 1895 became the medical officer to the 1st Bn. The Coldstream Guards. From 1st June 1895 to 15th February 1900 he was seconded for service under the Siamese Government. During which time, on 30th January 1898, he gained promotion to the rank of Surgeon Major. He later saw active service in the South African War during 1900 and 1901, taking part in operations in the Orange Free State, the Transvaal, and Cape Colony. He was then seconded for service on the staff of the Government of Bombay from 9th October 1903 to 15th January 1907. On 1st March 1915 he gained promotion to the rank of Colonel, and was appointed Assistant Director of Medical Services to the 29th Division, entering the war in Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. He received the honour of Companion Order of the Bath in 1915 for is services in there. In April 1916, he transferred to Malta, where he took over from Surgeon-General Whitehead as the Deputy Director of Medical Services. On 3rd August 1916, he served under the rank of temporary Surgeon-General, without pay and allowances of the rank, whilst becoming the Director of Medical Services in Malta in 1917. He remained in this role until the end of the war. During 1917 he was appointed Knight Commander Order of St Michael and St George. Michael retired in 1921. He died in a London nursing home.
