This is the official c.v. of CEP according to the Army, which has been shortened somewhat. MARRIED: Winifred Mabel ,née Jay on 4th January 1906 in Felixstowe. CHILDREN: Winifred Margaret (Peggie) dob 19th October 1906 Charles Brian Russell dob 25th October 1908 Mary Whitmore ( Miggs) dob 25th August 1913. EXAMINATIONS FOR PROMOTION: He had to take a series of exams throughout his career to ensure promotion, from 1893 to 1908. He obtained 6 months accelerated promotion on being appointed Major in 1903 and his speciality was, skin and Venereal disease. LANGUAGES: Interpreter first class in German – completely bi-lingual and could and did pass as a German. Interpreter second class in French Higher standard Urdu, Lower standard Persian and Pushtu and some knowledge of Dutch. CAMPAIGNS: Tirah : August 1897 to April 1898. South African (Boer War): February 1902 to September 1902. First World War. Sierra Leone : 30th July 1914 to 6th March 1915. France and Belgium: 17th April to the Armistice. Germany: Armistice to 18th December 1919. DECORATIONS: D.S.O. January 1917. Mentioned in Despatches: 13th November 1916, 9th April 1917, 7th November 1917 and 16th March 1919. C.B.E June 1919. C.B. Major General 1st June 1922. Deputy Director General of R.A.M.C. 1st August 1922. RECORD OF SERVICE AND MOVEMENTS: 1892 entered A.M.S. (Army Medical Service). 1892 September: Netley on probation.( 4 months). 1893 February: Aldershot School of instruction (2 months). 1893 April: Posted to Southern District for Duty, Portsmouth and Gosport.(4 months). 1895 September: Embarked for India on H.T. Victoria. 1895 October: Posted to Rohilshand district, in Bareilly, Shahjehanpur and Ranikhet. 1897 August: Tirah Campaign (No 9 Field Hospital – 4th Brigade). 1900 February: Six months sick leave in UK. 1900 September: Returned to India, Lucknow and Boer POW camp in Shahjehanpur. 1901 December: Return to UK for one month posting. 1902 February: South African field force. 1902 October: returned to UK to senior course at RAMC College, served in Woolwich and appointed secretary to the Advisory Board on Venereal Disease. 1905 March: posted to Valetta and Cottonera, Garrison Staff Surgeon, and staff Surgeon to Duke of Connaught. 1909 September: return to UK attached to MO Staff at War Office and appointed MO 6 in Directorate of Military Operations. 1914 February: Sierra Leone Military Hospital Freetown. 1915 March: British Expeditionary Force, Malassise Hospital (near St Omer). A.D.M.S. 15th Division, D.D.M.S. IV Corps, GHQ South and VI Corps. 1918 23rd December: posted as Chief of Mission in Berlin to evacuate wounded POWs’. 1919 5th April : posted to British Military Mission in Berlin (head of political section). 1920 January/ posted ADMS Shorncliffe District. Here the record ends but we know he was posted to London and became D.D.G. of the R.A.M.C. in 1922. Represented War Office at various Medical Congresses on the Continent. Represented War Office at Int. Red Cross Conference, Washington DC 1912 and at General Medical Congress in London 1913. Intimate acquaintance with German internal politics up to the end of 1919 while in charge of Political section of the British Military Mission. Asst. Editor of RAMC journal for four years.
