Charles enlisted on 2nd December 1914. He was 23 years old, and was a core maker by trade. He was embodied into the 3rd West Riding Divisional Field Ambulance. On 5th July 1915 he was transferred to the 2nd/3rd West Riding Field Ambulance. On 21st March 1917 he embarked at Southampton with a draft of the 3/3rd West Riding Field Ambulance and disembarked in Rouen the following day. In Rouen he joined a Cyclist’s Battalion Depot and then was attached to the 2nd/1st West Riding Field Ambulance joining them ‘in the field’ on 4th April 1917. Whilst with the 2nd/1st West Riding Field Ambulance he suffered from several bouts of illness including influenza. He was sent back to the UK on 24th December 1917 suffering from bronchitis and was admitted to the Red Cross Auxiliary Hospital at The Castle, Ryde, Isle of Wight. He was discharged on 21st January 1918 and sent to join ‘H’ Coy at Blackpool. On 23rd June Charles committed suicide ‘whilst of unsound mind’ at his billet 24 Lytham Road, Blackpool. He was the son of Frederick and Sarah Crust of 11 Frampton Terrace, Gainsborough; and the husband of Sarah Wilson (formerly Crust) of 204 High St, Ecclesfield near Sheffield and father of Jennie Crust.
