George enlisted into the 2nd East Anglian Divisional Field Ambulance on the 14th September 1915 as Private 2478 FEARNLEY. His occupation was a labourer and he was 34 years old. On the 21st October 1915 he was transferred to the 1st East Anglian Divisional Field Ambulance and served with the 3/1st East Anglian Field Ambulance as Pte 2611 FEARNLEY at 'Home'. On the 24th March 1917, George was posted to the Regular RAMC as Pte 93343 FEARNLEY and sent to K Coy in Blackpool. He left England on the 17th May and entered the war in France, at Rouen, the next day. He was then posted on the 26th May to serve in the Field with the 141st Field Ambulance. On the 12th November 1917, whilst on duty and proceeding from Irish Farm to Dulhallow, George jumped over a shell hole, putting his foot down on a stone, he went over badly spraining his right ankle. He was admitted into No 2 Field Ambulance the next day and then passed back to the 63rd Casualty Clearing Station. On the 15th November, George boarded No 5 Ambulance Train and was sent to No 20 General Hospital. An enquiry was conducted on the 18th and it was established that it was an accident and he was not to blame. He was sent back to England on the 19th November 1917 and remained in Blackpool until the 5th March 1919. George finally left HMS on the 31st March 1920.
