Other Information:Pte P Whittle was one of a quota of N.C.O.’s and men, known as 'Special Reserve', to transfer from the 1st Home Counties Field Ambulance to serve with the Expeditionary Force. On 6th August 1916, Captain Greene marched with the detachment to a field adjoining Monockton’s Mill, Sandling Road, Maidstone, which became the mobilization headquarters of No 10 Field Ambulance. He entered the war with the 10th Field Ambulance on 23rd August 1914. He transferred back to the 1st Hoe Counties Field Ambulance on 5th May 1916. According to his Medal Index Card he later transferred from the Territorial Force to the Regular Army, R.A.M.C., serving with "E" Coy under the service number 201120, later becoming 7251200 when the Army numbering system changed. During this time he received promotion to the rank of Corporal.
