Other Information:Hugh was educated at Gresham's Holt, and at Edinburgh University, where he qualified M.B., Ch.B. in 1914. He took a commission as lieutenant in the 1st Home Counties Field Ambulance on 10th November 1914. He gained promotion to Captain in May 1915. In January 1917, he went to France as Regimental Medical Officer to the 2nd Bn. London Rifle Brigade. He spent some time engaged in hospital work and with the 2/2nd Home Counties Field Ambulance. He was attending to wounded in an aid-post when a shell explosion occurred inflicting injuries from which he died the same afternoon. One of his senior officers wrote of him as a gallant officer in the field and an accomplished doctor. Hugh was the younger son of Mr C A Palmer of Eaton, Norwich; and the husband of Jean S Palmer, daughter of Mr Alexander Dobie, town clerk of Maxwelltown, Dumfries - they were married on 1915 and had one son.
