George Grice was 23 years and 8 months and living in Oakthorpe, Ashby when he enlisted into the RAMC on the 18/08/1915. His trade/occupation was a Collier. At the time of his enlistment he was described as possessing good physical development, being 5’ 6½ ” tall, with a chest measurement recorded as ‘girth when expanded: 36½” with an expansion range of 2½”, his weight was not recorded. His visual acuity was noted as “RE 6/6 LE 6/6”. George enlisted and trained with the 3/2nd North Midland Field Ambulance. He received his 1st Inoculation on the 27th August, the 2nd on the 6th September and his final vaccination in December 1915. On the 27th July 1916 he embarked at Southampton and sailed to France. He disembarked at Rouen on the 29th July and was stationed at Rouen Base Depot from the 31st July to the 8th August when he was posted to the 1/2nd North Midland Field Ambulance as a reinforcement to serve in the field. Records indicate that George was admitted as a casualty to the 1/3rd North Midland Field Ambulance with Pyrexia on the 20th February 1917 and was discharged from hospital eight days later, on the 28th February. On the 18th August 1918, George’s war pay was increased to 3s./8d. This appears to be for good conduct, for which he also received a Good Conduct Badge. On the 25th October 1918 he was granted leave to the UK for 14 Days, he left France from Bologne and returned on the 8th November 1918. A Medical Report (Army Form B. 179A) on the 5th December 1918 indicates that by now George was serving with the 1/3rd Field Ambulance. This unit is also recorded on the Army Form W3226, which was completed during 1918, exact date unknown. The Army Form W3226 states that George was employed as an “Officers Servant” and that he was reliable, very intelligent and “A very good man”. George demobilised on the 31st January 1919. His discharge from the forces was on the 31st March 1920. His total service towards engagement in the Territorial Force was four years and 227 days.
