Other Information:John embodied into the 2nd East Lancashire Divisional Field Ambulance as a Private on the 1st September 1914. He lived in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, was aged 32 years and 3 months, and had previously served in HM Forces as Pte 14306 Street and had received the Queen’s South African Medal. On the 10th September 1914, he left England en-route for Egypt, arriving on the 26th September 1914. From there John went on to serve in Gallipoli, he received a bullet wound to his left forearm on the 6th June 1916 and left Gallipoli for Egypt, along with the unit, on the 16th January 1916. On the 1st February 1916 he was appointed the rank of Lance Corporal and was promoted to Corporal on the 21st March. The 1/2nd East Lancashire Field Ambulance, along with the 42nd Division, left the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in February 1917, John disembarked at Marseilles on the 6th March 1917 and, with the exception of three trips home on leave, served in France until the end of the war. He was wounded in action on 27th October 1917 and again on the 8th April 1918 but both times he remained on duty. John was awarded the Military Medal for his actions on the 25th March 1918, and was appointed the rank of acting Lance Serjeant on the 21st September 1918. He left the BEF on the 22nd January 1919 and was disembodied on the 23rd February to the reserves. John finally left the army on 31st March 1920, having served five years and 213 days.
