Other Information:Bernard was educated at Gordon’s College and at Aberdeen University - where he graduated M.B., Ch.B. in 1912. He then joined his father in general practice. Bernard had already served as a Private in the Scottish Horse (University Company) from 1908. on 21st November 1914 he gained a commission in the R.A.M.C. (T.F.) at the rank of Lieutenant with the 1st Highland Field Ambulance. He entered the war in France in April 1915 and served with the 2/1st Highland Field Ambulance. He was awarded the Military Cross on 20th October 1917, “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.” during the action in front of the Canal near Essex Farm north of Ypres. "He was in charge of a Divisional Collecting and Relay Bearer Post, and organized and carried out the evacuation of the wounded over the open under continuous fire. It was only by his unfailing courage and energy that the work was accomplished". Bernard was assisting Lt/Col James Robinson in managing the disposal of the men of his unit in a sunken road for shelter as their hutments were being shelled, when he was mortally wounded. He died some hours later at the 51st Divisional Main Dressing Station at Beugny. He was described as a man of gentle disposition, which endeared him to his patients whether at home or on the field of battle. He was the only son of Dr A T Gordon Beveridge and Lily Beveridge; and the husband of Sarah Gertrude Beveridge (a daughter of Thomas Buffey) of 54 Darnley Road, Pollokshields, Glasgow - Married in 1915.
