William was employed at the Dominion Bank, at Winnipeg then as assistant accountant in the branch at Vancouver, B.C. When he was at Winnipeg he was an enthusiastic athlete and footballer, and captained the team in connection with Ralph Connorís Church. When war broke out he resigned his appointment and returned home and joined the 1st Lowland Field Ambulance. He died of meningitis at Hawick. William was the elder son of Thomas J and Mary Morrison Anchinblas Howie of 23 Kirkburn Avenue, Cambuslang; and the brother of Captain and Adjutant Adrian M Howie, M.R.C.V.S., who was in charge of the South African Veterinary Corps in East Africa, serving under General Smuts. He was unmarried.
