Robert attested on 11th November 1914 and was embodied into the R.A.M.C. Territorial Force, attached to the 3rd Reserve Lowland Field Ambulance. He was 20 years and 10 months old and a printer by trade. He embarked at Devonport on 5th September 1915, then disembarking at Alexandria he entered the war in Egypt on the 13th September 1915. Robert served with the 1/3rd Lowland Field Ambulance and also, on 3rd March 1916, was posted to serve with the 3/3rd Lowland Field Ambulance. On 16th May 1916, he disembarked at Marseilles and was then posted - on the 26th, to join the 51st Division Base Depot from 30th Infantry Base at Etaples. On 31st July 1916, he became attached to the 2/1st Highland Field Ambulance, in the field, but became ill (PUO) on 27th September. He was transferred down the line to No 7 General Hospital, then sent back to England on 22nd November. He returned to France on 4th August 1917, embarking at Folkestone, he disembarked at Boulogne the same day, then entrained for Rouen, arriving on the 6th, where he was posted to join the Cyclists Base Depot. On 11th August 1917, Robert was posted to serve with the 113th Field Ambulance, in the field. He was the son of William L and Mary Pearson of 116 St. Stephen Street, Edinburgh.
