Other Information:Alexander was educated at Higher Grade Kintore School, and became an apprentice Engineer with Harpers Ltd, Aberdeen. He enlisted on 9th November 1914, and was embodied into the R.A.M.C., T.F, - 2nd (Reserve) Highland Field Ambulance. On 30th April 1915, he embarked at Southampton, then disembarking at Havre the next day, he entered the war in France on 1st May 1915. Alexander received a gun shot wound to his face and neck on 25th July 1916, and was transferred through the chain of evacuation to Boulogne, arriving the next day. From 4th August he convalesced at Rouen, then re-joined his unit, in the field, on 2nd December 1916. He was killed east of Ypres and was buried in “the Willows” near Essex Farm, Ypres. His Commanding Officer wrote to his family: “I very much regret that this bearer was killed while carrying a wounded man, but I should like you to convey to his relations how much I admired his courage and determination. He continued to carry stretchers through very heavy shell fire until he was killed. His personal example had a most inspiring effect on all the other bearers. Alexander was the son of James and Mary Argo [daughter of John Henderson] of Hillhead, Kintore, Aberdeenshire.
