John joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1908 and served with the 1st South Western Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance for 4 years after which he transferred to the reserve. At the outbreak of the First World War he re-enlisted in the Territorial Force joining his old unit with the rank of corporal on (16th September 1914 at Swindon). At the time of enlistment he was a gas fitter working on the Great Western Railway. He was promoted to sergeant on 3rd October 1914 and staff sergeant on 16th March 1918.   He served in North Russia between 14th November 1918 and 15th July 1919 and was attached to the 55th Stationary Hospital. While in Russia he was wounded in the thigh (January 1919). He was discharged on 31st March1920.   He joined the Swindon branch of the St. John’s Ambulance brigade in 1921, attaining the rank of superintendent. He was awarded the order of St. John (serving brother) in 1949 (Gazette 3rd January 1950).   During the Second World War he served as a full time ARP deport officer until ill health forced him to resign.
