Edward was educated in Bristol and Dublin, and at Guy's Hospital, entering in March 1892, he qualified M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. in 1893. He then filled he posts of junior house-surgeon at Chesterfield Hospital and resident medical officer at Dover Hospital. When war was declared, Edward was in practice at Bridgwater, Somerset. He gained a commission at the rank of Lieutenant in the R.A.M.C. on 22nd September 1914, with the London Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance.
