Other Information:Alfred was educated at St Peter’s College, Radley and Caius College, Cambridge, qualifying in 1887. He had previously served through the South African campaign and was wounded at Johannesburg while attached to the Gordon Highlanders, and received the Queen’s medal with five clasps and the King’s medal with two clasps. He settled in Cleobury Mortimer, where he built up a large practice in and around the town. When war broke out he volunteered for overseas service, and entered the war in France on 30th September 1915. He served for eight months, returning to England for a home appointment. Alfred was described as a staunch colleague and as a commanding officer who was ever watchful of the interests and comfort of his men. He was the only surviving son of Richard Benson of 74 Philbeach-Gardens, S.W. He was married, and had a daughter and a son who also served in the war with Lord Strathoona’s Horse.
