Henry was educated at Ordiquhill Public School, then entered the office of the “Banffshire Journal”, and was afterwards appointed Manager of the Advertising Department of the “Fifeshire Advertiser” in Kirkcaldy. He enlisted into R.A.M.C. (T.F.) on 17th February 1915, and was embodied into the Scottish Horse Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance. After his training he went to Egypt, where he later became attached to the Black Watch and proceeded to Salonika. He died there of wounds received in action at Mekes. His Commanding Officer wrote: “I thought most highly of him, and chose him for the detached duty as I could so thoroughly trust him to do all I wished in the way of looking after the regiment. I needed someone who could think and act, and am proud to know that he did his part splendidly, and was a great comfort to the men of the regiment. His loss to the unit is great.” Another officer wrote: “During the months he worked under me I learned to appreciate highly his keen interest in his work, his devotion to duty and beauty of character. I feel his loss a personal one, and the whole battalion share that personal sense of loss.” Henry was the son of William and Elizabeth (daughter of Alexander Cocks) Lawrence of Westertown Grange, Keith, Scotland.
