Other Information:Horace lived in Chatham. He arrived in France on the 18th August 1914. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in remaining with the rearguard and dressing the wounded during a retirement. Later, when all ambulances had been withdrawn, he evacuated wounded on led horses, wheel barrows and other emergency transport until all had been removed, and then guided the last stretcher squads over the ridge under intense shall and machine gun fire. By his courage and coolness he prevented many wounded from falling into the enemy's hands."
