Other Information:

Walter was educated at Mercer's School, London (School admissions record) and studied medicine at St George's Hospital, London (correspondence with the archivist), qualifying L.R.C.P. and M.R.C.S. in 1903. On 26th April 1905 he married Forence Hannah Tunnicliffe at All Souls Church, Langham Place, London. Between 1908 and 1913 he served as a surgeon with Sir Wilfred Grenfell in Labrador, where he was surgeon in charge of Indian Harbour Hospital. He was a J.P. for Labrador and F.R.G.S. (books 'Jesse Luther at the Grenfell Mission' by Ronald Rompkey and 'The story of a Labrador Doctor' by Sir Wilfred Grenfell). He volunteered for service with the R.A.M.C. and entered the war in France on 30th October 1914 (MIC). He also served as a Temporary Honorary Captain with the Australian Voluntary Hospital, prior to being commissioned on 15th October 1915 as a temporary Captain in the R.A.M.C. (LG 1/11/1915). Walter's obituary, listed in the Lancet on 22nd July 1916, stated he saw service with the M.E.F. in 1915 and again in France in 1916. Walter died in No 3 General Hospital, Le Treport (French hospital report), he was the youngest son of Rev. William Armstrong and his wife Elizabeth Anne (birth cert.).
