He entered the war in France on 8th November 1914 but was admitted into No 14 General Hospital on 21st December and transferred back to England on 1st January 1915. On 22 February 1916 he was discharged termination of his 1st Period of Engagement. He was sent to Army Reserve and mobilized on 6th August 1917, when he was posted to "Z" Coy. On 2nd December 1917 he embarked at Southampton and proceeded overseas to Havre with No 72 General Hospital. On 20th August 1918, he joined the Base Depot at Etaples and was posted to serve with the 16th Field Ambulance. He was wounded in action (gas) on the 19th October 1918 and taken to the 11th Field Ambulance. He died from his wounds in No 9 General Hospital, Rouen. Richard was the son of Charles Hanks of Dublin; and the husband of Robina Hanks of 46 Eveline Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow. [Information sources: CWGC, Soldiers Died, MIC and Service record] Richard was kinsman of Andrew George Tottenham Hanks, R.A.M.C. According to a Hanks family history they were descended from a Cromwellian soldier who settled in Monkstown Cork, he and a Col Phayre were returned to England following the restoration, both were pardoned and returned to Ireland Col.Phayre to Cork & Col Huncks/Hunks to Kings County. The name change of both Phayre and Huncks was understandable as they kept their heads down and firmly on their shoulders. According to the same history, William Lapham Hanks married his cousin Jane Tottenham, daughter of Rev Tottenham of Rathangan County Kildare. during 1829 William was disinherited by his father, differences were resolved during the 1860s.The Tottenham-Hanks were then living in Baltiboys Wicklow where Andrew George Tottenham Hanks was born.
