Other Information:

Ernest lived in Leeds. He enlisted into the R.A.M.C. on 19th September 1908, and was shortly after posted to serve with No 17 Coy. He then transferred to serve with No 33 Coy. From 13th September to 12th December 1911 he served in Egypt. He then served in Cyprus from 13th December 1911 to 16th January 1914, after which he returned to Egypt on 17th January, serving there until 18th October 1914. During this time, on 10th August 1914, he gained promotion to the rank of Corporal. He entered the war in France on the 5th November 1914. On 20th January 1915 he was promoted to the rank of Serjeant. He served in France until 19th November 1917 when he moved to Italy, serving there until 25th March 1919. During this time his rank reverted back to the rank of Private on 29th January 1918. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in charge of a relay post for three days. He worked without ceasing, collecting and evacuating wounded under heavy shell fire and so saved the lives of many men." Ernest continued to serve after the war under the service number 7245776. On 1st June 1920 he gained promotion again to the rank of Corporal. Around that time he was posted to serve with No 31 Coy. From 11th December 1920 to 26th February 1926 he served in India. During this time he was appointed the rank of Lance Serjeant on 5th September 1922, and also gained promotion to the rank of Staff Serjeant on 12th September 1925. On 28th April 1926 he was posted to serve with No 1 Coy, then on 4th May 1926 was transferred to serve with No 2 Coy. He received the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1927. His was discharged from the Colours on Completion of Engagement on 18th September 1930. [Information and photograph kindly provided by Ernest's family]
