Other Information:Wilfred enlisted on 16th February 1914. He was 18 years and 15 days old, and was a Hairdresser by trade. He entered the war in France on 16th August 1914 with the 4th Field Ambulance. His name appears on a list of R.A.M.C. personnel who were taken captive up to & including 31st December 1914. His address was given as 10 Green Bank, High Street, Rhyl. N. Wales - (kindly provided by Steve Mattocks).
In the early hours of 26th August, the 4th Field Ambulance were ordered to go to Landrecies to treat and evacuate the wounded. A couple of hours after entering the town the Germans arrived, and Wilfred became one of 219 of the rank and file of the R.A.M.C. to be held captive there. He was taken to Germany entering Sennelager POW camp on 3rd September 1914.
On 21st July 1915 he embarked in England for Egypt, disembarking there on 4th August 1915. In 1916 he was serving on the hospital ship "Devanha" when he had an attack of malaria. He had four more attacks up to January 1918, including an attack of nephritis in 1917. For this reason it was recommended for him to return to England, however he was sent to Deolali instead, then onto Poona where he was posted to serve with No 2 Section, Stationary Hospital, Poona. In August 1918 the attacks began again, which resulted in him having several stays in the King George War Hospital, Poona from 5th August 1918 to 27th August 1919. During this time, on 15th December 1918 he was posted to serve with No 36 Coy, Poona. He was eventually evacuated back to England and was admitted into Kitcheners Hospital, Brighton on 16th October 1919. He was discharged from hospital on 30th October 1919, and discharged from the Colours on 8th January 1920.
