Other Information:Walter enlisted into the Bedfordshire Regiment on 10th February 1903. He was 19 years and 11 months old, and was a Painter by trade. He served in the UK until 23rd November 1904, when he was posted to serve in India. On 8th March 1906 he returned to the UK, then was transferred to Army Reserve 2 days later, on the 10th. He rejoined the Colours on 3rd February 1909, then transferred to the R.A.M.C. on 5th May 1909. He entered the war in France on 16th August 1914 with the 4th Field Ambulance. His name appears on a list of R.A.M.C. personnel who were taken captive up to & including 31st December 1914. His address was given as 94 Chapman Road, Hackney, London. In the early hours of 26th August, the 4th Field Ambulance were ordered to go to Landrecies to treat and evacuate the wounded. A couple of hours after entering the town the Germans arrived, and Walter became one of 219 of the rank and file of the R.A.M.C. to be held captive there. He was taken to Germany entering Sennelager POW camp on 4th September 1914.
He returned to the UK on 30th June 1915, then on 21st July 1915 to 21st August 1917 he served with the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force. He returned to India on 22nd August 1917 and served there until 10th March 1919 when he began the journey back to the UK. On 3rd January 1920 he left service with the R.A.M.C. upon entering the Claybury Mental Hospital, Woodford Bridge. He died as a patient there on 3rd June 1946.
