Martin was educated at Durham School and Edinburgh University - entering as a student of medicine in 1883 he qualified M.B., C.M. in 1889. He entered the war in France on 7th October 1914. Martin was the youngest son of the late Martin and Georgina Richardson of Roseville, Bridlington, Yorks, and the husband of Elizabeth Maud Richardson of 1 Selwood Terrace, Onslow Gardens.
