Other Information:

Thomas was educated in Trent College, Nottingham, and in Campbell College, Belfast. He also studied at Queen's College, Belfast, and in 1905 graduated M.B. of the Royal University of Ireland. He was house surgeon at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, and shortly afterwards entered the Army Medical Department, gaining first place at the examination. He gained a commission at the rank of Lieutenant on 29th July 1907, and served in India from 1909 to 1914 - during which time he was promoted to Captain on 29th January 1911. He was stationed at Allahabad when war was declared but was home on leave, and as a consequence was posted to Victoria Barracks, Belfast. He entered the war in France on 3rd October 1914 and served with the 21st Field Ambulance. Thomas was struck by a shell whilst attending the wounded and died in No 4 Clearing Station. He was the son of Reverend John Gillis and Mrs Anne Phillips of Belfast.
