Other Information:Richard was known as "Dick" to his friends. He was a native of Pembridge but had been living with his family at Putson for over 20 years; and had held an apprenticeship with Messrs, Bowers and Co, builders and contractors in the carpentry and joinery department, when war was declared. He volunteered and joined the R.A.M.C. as part of Kitchener's Army. Richard entered the war in France on 18th February 1915. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal: "For conspicuous gallantry during attacks and counter-attacks, in charge of stretcher-bearers. Later calling for volunteers, he cleared away the wounded", whilst serving with the 14th Field Ambulance. He had previously been awarded the Russian Cross of the Order of St George, 4th Class by the Czar for his work at 'Hill 60'. He was the son of Mrs Davies, Wyeland Villa, Hinton Road, Putson.
