Frank had already served 3 years with the R.A.M.C., being discharged on 8th November 1912. He later applied for service with the North Eastern Railway Police and was appointed as a constable on 5th June 1914, stationed at Gateshead. On 5th August 1914, he was recalled to the colours to rejoin his regiment. (Information researched and kindly provided by John Grainger) Frank entered the war in France on 18th August 1914, serving with the 7th Field Ambulance. He was admitted to hospital suffering from tonsillitis on 25th November 1914 and evacuated to Bailleul. He was serving with No 1 Stationary Hospital on 20th May 1917, when he died suffering a gun shot wound to his head. It was believed it was self inflicted so a court of enquiry was held the following day. The opinion of the court was that he committed suicide, by shooting himself in the head with a service revolver between the hours of 3.30 p.m. and 10.00 p.m. The court was also of the opinion that he was of unsound mind at the time, owing to recent loss of both his mother and brother, and that the fact that he had applied for transfer to the cavalry but it had been refused. He was the son of Joseph and Matilda Ann (nee Pinder) Ounsworth of 81 Raywell Street, Hull.
