Frederick was educated at Campbell College, Belfast, where he held a scholarship, and at Edinburgh University, where he graduated M.B., Ch.B. in 1906. After graduating he filled the posts of house physician and resident medical officer at the Stanley Hospital, Liverpool. He gained a commissioned at the rank of Lieutenant on the 4th February 1908, then seeing service in various stations at home he was sent to India in 1910. On 4th August 1911 he gained promotion to Captain. He was stationed at Allahabad, India when war was declared. He went to France in September 1914 but was invalided in 1915. In April 1916, Frederick became the Officer Commanding the 15th Field Ambulance. He gained the rank of temporary Major on 10th April 1916, then became acting Lieutenant Colonel on 22nd August 1916. The unit had set up the Main Dressing Station at Bus when a high velocity shell landed directly on a small shelter where Frederick and his second in command, acting Major Campbell McNeill McCormack were sleeping. They were both killed. A friend and colleague wrote: “I had known him ever since he came as O. C. to the ambulance and he has always shown the greatest kindness and consideration for all the officers. When there was any difficulty he was always ready to come to one’s help, and in times of danger he was always ready to take his part.” Col Hewetson, A.D.M.S. 5th Division wrote: “Your brother was so popular with officers and men alike, and he was also such a capable and efficient commanding officer, that I feel quite lost without him…. His able advice, which at all times was so readily given, was always most helpful to me……. He spent all of his time thinking of his sub-ordinates and their comfort….. His memory will live long in the hearts and minds of us all.” Frederick was the youngest son of Rev. Cannon W H Bradley, Rector of Monagham, and his wife Martha, daughter of Parker Molley, M.D; and the husband of the late (Died 6th December 1913) Esther Ellen Lacey Hargreaves, daughter of the late Williams Hargraves, of Liverpool – married in Calcutta on 11th October 1912.
