Charles enlisted on 12th January 1916. He was 31 years old and a Bank Clerk by trade. He joined at Dublin on the 14th, and was transferred to the training depot in Aldershot on 13th October. He embarked at Southampton on 6th November 1916, then disembarking the next day at Rouen he entered the war in France on 7th November 1916. He was posted to serve with the 69th Field Ambulance, in the field, on the 14th. He died of wounds received in action in 44 Casualty Clearing Station.
