Other Information:Alfred was educated at St Peter’s School, Lark Street, Farnworth. He then became a Butcher by trade and worked at Farnworth. He volunteered and enlisted on 27th May 1915, and served in France from 11th August 1915. He was killed by shell fire, and was buried near Martinpuich, 500 yards due south of the village of Bazentin-le-Grand. His officer wrote: “He was killed in action on 19 Aug whilst with a party ordered to send help to another ambulance..... He was killed instantly by a shell.... He had been with me since the ambulance came out, and had done excellent work and bore an excellent character.” He is recorded on the CWGC website as being killed on 20th August but in the War Diary is recorded as being killed on the 19th August.
