Richard enlisted on 26th August 1915. He was 20 years old, was a Carter by trade, and was living in Sussex at at the time. He joined at Hasting and was posted to "T" Coy on the 31st. He was then transferred to serve with the 103rd Field Ambulance on 25th September, the same year. Richard embarked at Southampton on 11th January 1916, then disembarking at Havre the next day, he entered the war in France on 12th January 1916. He was the son of Sarah Anne Payne of Passonage Cottage, Herstmonceux, Sussex.
