Other Information:John lived at 46 Newington Avenue, Belfast. He entered the war in France on 5th October 1915. His unit is recorded by the CWGC as being 9th Field Ambulance but his death is recorded in the personal war diary of a comrade from the 109th Field Ambulance. It is also recorded that he was awarded the Military Medal for his actions when an ammunition train of nine trucks caught fire. He, along with 54552 Private J H Feely, 41011 Serjeant R Hall and 41008 Serjeant Major T Harland, pushed out of danger eight trucks of ammunition. This gallant work was performed amidst a hail of shells and fragments, owing to the ammunition in the ninth truck exploding. At any moment the contents of the remaining truck might have also exploded. John was the son of John and Annie Greenwood of 5 Holborn Avenue, Bangor, Co. Down.
