A coke drawer by trade, John was appointed to the Durham County Constabulary on the 22nd September 1913 as PC 191, 3rd class constable. On the 1st April 1914 he was promoted to 2nd class PC. On the 8th October 1914, John resigned to join HMF and enlisted into the RAMC at Seaham Harbour. He was posted to the 34th Field Ambulance on the 11th October 1914 and by the 20th November was granted 5th rate corps pay at 4d per dieu. John served in Egypt and then Belgium, where in action at Thiepval he sustained a shrapnel wound to the chest, front of sternum, which was a non penetrating and clean wound, On the 7th October 1916 to the 11th October 1916, John was in hospital at Fort Pitt, Chatton, then from the 11th October to the 22nd December 1916, was in hospital at Preston Hall, Aylesford. On the 14th July 1917, John was discharged from the army as no longer physically fit for war service but was re-admitted into the police force on the 16th as 2nd class, PC 191 stationed at West Stanley. John continued to serve with the Durham County Constabulary up until he retired on the 28th January 1939. However, he was re-admitted as 1st Police Reserve No 0120 on the 1st September 1939 and stationed at Consett until he resigned on the 28th February 1943.
