Other Information:William’s full name was William Henry George Eldridge (although the Army certificate only has him as William George Eldridge, his full name confirmed from his death certificate). In 1891 the family lived at 46 Goldstone Road, Hove. The family had moved to 33 Windsor Road, Bexhill by 1901 and were living at number 47 in the same road in 1911. In the census of that year William was employed as a "Compositor/newsboy" in a local newspaper. He enlisted into the R.A.M.C. in August 1914. He was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry at Mametz Wood on 9 August 1916 The 45th Field Ambulance War Diary for 31st August 1916 records..... '30210 Sergeant W Eldridge has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry and devotion to duty on 9 August 1916 in evacuating and looking after casualties during a heavy bombardment of Mametz Wood and carrying on with the work of receiving gassed men from a dugout after Captain Raymond (RAMC) had been wounded and later Captain Hamilton (RAMC) had been gassed'. (LG 21st October 1916.) He was awarded a Bar to his Military Medal for gallantry at the Battle of Pilckem Ridge, Passchendaele on 31st July 1917 (LG 18th October 1917). The second award entry in the London Gazette gives William’s home as Bexhill, Sussex and his discharge certificate confirms his service with the 45th Field Ambulance and gives his year of birth as 1891. He was promoted to Warrant Officer Class 2 in June 1918, and was discharged from the Army in February 1919. He died at All Saints Hospital, Eastbourne on 3rd August 1985, aged 94. His occupation is given as "Retired Bank Official". William was the son of George, a carpenter/joiner, widowed by the time of the 1901 Census, and Mary Ann Eldridge (nee Stone) who died within a year of William’s birth.
