Other Information:By 1901 Joseph’s family had moved to the Scottish borders and were living in Hawick, Roxburghshire. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and was awarded his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery on 24th July 1908. He married Margaret Kennedy and they had at least one son, ‘Herbert Derrick Bell Lorraine’, born on 1st April 1913 in Rangoon, Burma. Joseph held an appointment as Medical Officer for the Burma Oil Company in Upper Burma. He also worked at the Sanitarium in Nordrach-on-Dee, near Banchory, Kincardineshire [Aberdeenshire]. In 1915 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. Also on 17th March 1915 he took up a temporary commission at the rank of Lieutenant in the R.A.M.C., then went overseas to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force the following July 1915, On 17th March 1916 he gained promoted to the rank of Captain. By 2nd July 1918 he was serving with the 35th Field Ambulance, when he was transferred to replace Capt Meek, the medical officer of the 58th Bde R.F.A. On 10th December 1918 he left the 58th Bde, R.F.A. to go to Etaples, where he joined No 46 Stationary Hospital.
He relinquished his commission on 23rd May 1919 to return to medicine back in the UK, and was awarded his Doctor of Medicine at Edinburgh University in 1925. His thesis was "Artificial pneumothorax: its theory and practice". By 1929 he was living in London where he practiced medicine and was still there when he died. He was the eldest son of Dr Herbert James Bell Lorraine and Jane Lorraine (née Hewat).
