Other Information:Herbert was appointed by Middlesbrough Police on 17th September 1910 and by the Watch Committee on 26th September 1910 as PC 32. He was 5 Ft, 9 1/2 inch tall. From the 26th September 1910, he was on probation for a period of 6 months. Herbert's appointment was confirmed on the 23rd March 1911 when he became a 4th class PC, then a 3rd Class PC on the 12th March 1912, and a 2nd class PC on the 26th September 1912. On the 19th May 1915, Bernard resigned to join HMF and enlisted with the RAMC. After the war, on 4th January 1919, he returned to the Police Force, however he was examined by a police surgeon on the 7th January 1919 and found to be physically unfit for police duties due to war wounds. WC ordered that he be temporary appointed for a period of 6 months to recover health, and a further report submitted at the end of that time. He was examined again on the 11th July 1919 by a police surgeon and still physically unfit for police service, he was allowed a further 6 months to recover health. On the 18th December 1919 a Surgeon stated there was an improvement in officers condition, WC ordered a further report in 12 months. [Information researched and provided by John Grainger]
