Ralph enlisted into the RAMC at the age of 16. He was involved in the battle of Loos and was one of the stretcher-bearers who carried the body of General Wing from the battlefield. Ralph later joined the 2/22 London regiment after being withdrawn from the front line for being under age, he is 16 years old in his photograph. He was wounded in September 1918 and ended the war in the Citadel Hospital Cairo. Ralph gained the 1915 Star, and the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
