Edwin had at some time received 11 months treatment for meningitis but was free from the disease and was called up for service on the 16th April 1917, joining the R.A.M.C. He was 35 years and 1 month old, and his occupation on the enlistment form was given as a dentist but later in the Service Record it states he was registered as a ‘dental mechanic’. He was single. He was posted for training at "W" Coy on the 18th April 1917, then on 19th September 1917 he was posted to K Coy, R.A.M.C. Depot at Blackpool. On 17th January 1918 he was posted to No. 8 Coy for duty at the Dental Depot, East Leeds War Hospital. His Service Record states that on 13th March 1919 he was instructed to proceed to the dispersal station at Fovant for demobilization but this order was cancelled and it appears he must have stayed in the army. He was admitted to the 2nd Northern General Hospital, Leeds on the 16th September 1919, where he died 13 days later of tubercular meningitis.
