Walter enlisted into the RAMC on 7th June 1902 and served as a 3rd Class Orderly. He was discharged on the 6th June 1914, on the termination of his first period of engagement, having served 12 years. Walter re-enlisted on the 17th June 1914, and entered the war in France on the 15th August. He was wounded in action on the 7th October 1917. Walter was discharged after serving 3 years and 363 days, he was issued a Silver War Badge.
