Frank entered the war in France on 16th August 1914, as part of the Regimental Medical Officer's team for the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys). He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "For conspicuously gallant conduct on 2nd November near Kemmel, when he continued to attend on the wounded, although a shell had burst in the room in which they lay and he had been stunned by the concussion."
